MSA CULTURAL TOURS NEWSLETTER
AUGUST, 2016

Dear Fellow Travelers,

The 2016 summer is quickly passing and in two months we will be departing for our fall MSA Cultural Tour of Southern Greece. A quick note on the Greece tour - we can take two more people if we receive your registration before September 15th.

Spring, 2017 remains a lacuna in our schedule as hope springs eternal for a Cuban Tour. The good news is that scheduled flights (in contrast to the current very expensive and inconvenient charter flights) to Cuba are scheduled to commence August 31, but we have discovered in dealing with Cuba ‘believe it when we see it.’ In addition to airline flights, there is the challenge of finding appropriate hotel accommodations (large tour companies are booking hotel rooms years in advance) and a coach rental. Everything in Cuba remains strictly controlled by the government. We will need to make a final decision no later than September, under any circumstance we intend to visit Cuba again in early 2017.

If unable to do Cuba, we continue to consider a spring tour to French Canada and Maritime Provinces (flying into Halifax and out of Quebec) in which a number of you have expressed interest. On a more positive note I am happy to inform you that a tour to Sicily is organized for fall 2017.

Tony Miraglia, artist and UMD Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts will co-guide the tour. Tony was born in Sicily, is fluent in Italian, and brings his rich knowledge of Sicilian art and culture to the tour. For 12 years I had the pleasure of teaching with Tony in the successful UMD Summer Sicily Program. Tony and I will team teach a Rome and Sicily course for the Second Half Lifelong Learning Institute next spring. Professor Kathy Miraglia, UMD Art Education Department who has also taught in the Summer Sicily Program will also be with us sharing her extensive knowledge of Sicilian culture. Should you wish to contact Tony he can be reached at amiraglia@umassd.edu, or 508.646.8228.

THE HISTORY AND ART OF SICILY
OCTOBER 25 – NOVEMBER 4, 2017

The History and Art of Sicily tour will visit some of the most beautiful and important historic and artistic sites in Sicily. The great German poet and playwright, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote, “To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, for Sicily is the clue to everything.” Sicily is truly a magical and unique place due to the many civilizations that conquered it. These conquerors each left their unique and diverse cultural and artistic imprint on this beautiful island transforming it into a land like no other. The Tour web link and registration form can be found on the MSA Tours website, www.msaculturaltours.com. We hope you will consider joining us on this exciting tour which ends with two nights at the elegant Villa Schuler in Taormina.
