MSA CULTURAL TOURS
SPRING 2016 NEWSLETTER

Greetings and happy spring, after enjoying a warm winter in Florida it seems cold in MA but the ubiquitous signs of spring give hope warm weather will eventually arrive. It was a busy winter in Florida, I taught for the Institute for Life Long Learning, Louise was inundated with work for the 2016 MSA Congress in Palermo (the largest in 20 years) and we made a trip to Cuba. Since returning I am teaching Greek Civilization for Second Half with Tony Miraglia.

II. CUBA 2017

The Cuba tour remains a work in progress. We traveled to Camaguey in central Cuba (750 miles long island) in March We had a good stay, were well treated, and the Cubans seem pleased to have Americans and their money returning. We spent several nights at an excellent but very expensive resort on Cayo Coco, but most Americans would find ordinary Cuban hotels sub-standard. I anticipate most American visitors to Cuba in the next year will journey by cruise ship like the recent Carnival Cruise which provides cruise ship comfort after a day of sightseeing. However, for those who want to see the real Cuba, it will require travel to the interior and being prepared for an adventure that includes modest accommodations.

The itinerary of our tour when it happens will focus on Havana and include side trips to sites like Trinidad and the Bay of Pigs. It is important to keep in mind that Americans are still not allowed to travel to Cuba as tourists. Our proposed Cuban tour would have to be (like the recent Carnival Cruise) under the People to People program. People to People visits require an educational aspects; some lecture by Cuban academics and possibly supplemented by a Second Half course on Cuba taught by Mariano Merino and myself. One would not have to take the course to go on the tour, but the course would add validity and justification to the People to People rubric. ‘Hope springs eternal,’ we still hope to offer a Cuban tour in 2017
