MSA CULTURAL TOURS SUMMER/FALL, 2009

NEWSLETTER & SUMMER BULLETIN

Greetings everyone, hard to believe the end of summer is only a week away. For us the summer went quickly, commencing with the 12th Annual MSA Congress in Cagliari, moving to a new home in Dartmouth in July and enjoying a wonderful two-week Mediterranean cruise in August. We will soon depart for the American Western Tour and are finalizing details for the November Historic Spain trip. More later about future tours, but first news of the Annual Fellow Travelers Party.

FOURTH ANNUAL FELLOW TRAVELERS PARTY

Saturday, October 24 from 5:00pm 7:00 pm

The venue is the same as last year (Indian Cove, Marion. Thank you Ann & Paul), but we moved the event to October. August dates seriously conflicted with end of summer vacation plans, could be extremely hot, and offered extensive mosquito competition for the food. We are hoping October will smile upon us with cool temperatures, less vacation time competition, and a post frost mosquito population. Realizing many of you follow the Patriots we have also avoided Sundays. Assuming that the Red Sox will have won the World Series by then we hope to have eliminated as much scheduling competition as possible.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We know many of you purchase travel insurance, which for those over 70 or even 60, can be expensive. We have had recent situations necessitating last minute tour cancellation, emergencies requiring early return home, and injuries resulting in uninsured medical expenses. We are consequently looking into group travel insurance, which would insure every tour up to $2500 (average cost of a MSA tour), $25,000 for medical expenses, compensation for loss luggage, missed connections etc. Group coverage would add about $100 to the cost of a tour. We have not committed yet, but are seriously considering implementing this benefit in 2010. We welcome your comments on the subject.

GREECE, CORFU & ALBANIA, APRIL 8-19, 2010

12 DAYS AND 10 NIGHTS $2795

Many of you have written recently regarding this tour and we now have the completed details. The tour includes two days on Corfu, two days and a night in Albania, with the remainder of the time on the Greek Mainland (the last three nights in Athens). The major modification to the website itinerary is that we will now be spending two days and a night in Albania (rather than one day) and have added an extra night in Athens. Southern Albania was known in ancient times as Epirus. Olympus, mother of Alexander the Great, came from Epirus, as did King Pyrrhus from whom we get Pyrrhic Victory. In addition to seeing the famous Roman ruins at Butrint, we will visit the beautiful Byzantine Mesopotam monastery and church, famous for its architecture and historic connection to a Battle between Emperor Alex Commenus and the Norman, Robert Guiscard. Nearby is Phoinice, once capital of northern Epirus and residence of Olympia's brotherAlexander of Epirus (350-31 BC). We will also visit Gjirokatra a World Heritage Site of Unesco andone of the best preserved Ottoman (Turk) Towns in the Balkans. The night in Albania will include DINNER ON US. Lacking personal travel experience in Albania, we are working with Auron Expeditions who will provide guide service and logistical support. Mr. Auron Tare has organized expeditions in Albania for the Smithsonian and Royal Geographic Society, is one of the founders of Butrint National Park, a World Heritage Site of UNESCO and Coordinator for underwater archeological research in Albania. auron@auronexpeditions.com). We will be in good hands.

AIRFARES: YOU CAN GET YOUR OWN

You have most likely noted the cost of the Northern Greece Tour is a little more than was originally planned. The reasons are two fold, we have added an additional night and are finding airfare to Greece & Corfu much more expensive than anticipated. We wish to emphasize that on MSA Cultural Tour you are welcome (with advance notification please) to purchase your own plane tickets. Many of you have frequent flyer miles, which you are welcome to use. Keep in mind that we are selling the tour, not airplane tickets and we are always willing to allow you the opportunity to purchase your own tickets and subtract airfare from the tour price.

FOR THE NORTHERN GREECE AND CORFU TOUR YOU WILL RECEIVE A $900 CREDIT IF YOU OBTAIN YOUR OWN TICKET.
