MSA CULTURAL TOURS

FELLOW TRAVELERS
NEWSLETTER

SPRING 2007

Once again we are amazed at how quickly time is passing. This SPRING
NEWSLETTER commences the second year of independent operations by MSA
Cultural Tours. During the past year we conducted five tours: A Culinary
Tour to the Italian Abruzzi in October/November, Sicily in November, and New
Years Celebration in December/January, Origins of Portugal in February and
Greece in March. The Algarve trip in January was unfortunately cancelled
because of low enrollments. The 2007-2008 tour season is off to a smashing
start. The September Budapest-Prague-Vienna tour is sold out and
registrations for the November foliage tours to Southern France and
Northern Italy are progressing well (see itinerary details below).
.
We have also organized a GRAND TOUR OF ITALY for April 2008. Like the two
individual Foliage Tours in November 2007, they have totally different
itineraries and may be taken as individual tours or as part of a two week
package. Tour 1 will focus on Veneto and Umbria and Tour 2 on Tuscany and
Liguria. (see itineraries below). At this writing we are working on a tour
of Andalusia for January 2007. There have also been significant requests
for another New Years Celebration at a new venue. Details of these tours
will appear in the SUMMER NEWSLETTER.

KEEPING TOUR COSTS LOW

Despite raising travel expenses we continue to endeavor to keep the cost
of our tours as much below $2000 as possible. One way you can help us do
so is by paying by check rather than credit card. We will most certainly
continue to welcome and accept payment by Visa or Master Card. However,
our expenses when you pay for a tour by credit card average about $85.00
per tour. Consequently, if you could please pay by check it would be greatly
appreciated and help us keep our expenses down. If however, it is more
convenient for you to pay by credit card please continue to do. It is just
that we may eventually have to incorporate credit card expenses into the
price of future tours as travel costs increase.

NOCCIANO INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

Those of you who participated in the Culinary Tour and/or the New Years Celebration had the opportunity to visit the12th Century Castle in Nocciano Italy. That visit provided the opportunity to learn about the Nocciano Institute for Arts and Culture, which serves U.S. high school students each July. As a result of that experience a number of Fellow Travelers have formed a committee to support students who wish to attend the Institute. This committee has planned a benefit to be held on Sunday, April 15, 2007 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Woodland Commons Community Center on the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. The goal is to create scholarships for area high school students and provide them the opportunity to study in Nocciano. Committee members include Elizabeth Martin, Anne Bedser, Jeanne Drury, Chris Starvaggi, Louise Boudreau and Kathy Miraglia. For further information and tickets, please email Liz Martin at emartin@umassd.edu.

This year's program will offer courses for high school students in Painting and Drawing,Photography, Theater, Italian language and Culture, and Art Making and Critical Response: Arts-Based Inquiry for K-12 Teachers.

The Mediterranean Studies Association was incorporated in 1994 as a publicly supported organization exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It is an interdisciplinary organization, which promotes the scholarly study of the Mediterranean region and is devoted to promoting cultural interchanges, international education programs for high school and college students and understanding between peoples and countries. In 2003 the MSA was honored by the European Parliament with the prestigious Stella d'Oro Award for European Culture, thus laying the foundation for the Nocciano Institute for Arts and Culture. You are invited to visit the Nocciano Institute website at www.mediterraneanstudies.net.
